tntmo Oops, I did it again.

A friend of mine was having some issues with his truck, so he offered it up to me at a reasonable price so he could buy a new one. 2005 Nissan Titan, four door, doesn't have the tow package setup.

It popped a CEL, code 1759 which my generic code reader just said "Manufacturer transmission" and it seemed like the truck was in limp mode, barely moved and felt like the trans was slipping. I reset the code, checked the fluid and drove the truck home about 20 miles with no issues.

A bit of online research tells me that the valve body solenoids are known to fail and there are a few other issues that happen occasionally. Anyone in here familiar with these trucks and dealt with transmission issues?

Besides the transmission issue, I really like the truck. Rides nice, the engine has decent power, interior layout is ok....what other issues have people dealt with?

  2. I know of several, including a few in the employee parking lot, that are well over the 200k mark and are still going strong.
The ones I usually see with problems are the ones with lifts, questionable tuners, poorly engineered hot air kits, and driven worse than a rental car. Otherwise just beat into the ground. But cared for I know they will last. One guy at work has one to tow derby cars all across the southwest. Biggest problem is the paint is baked. But that is fairly common for 12+ year old vehicles that live outside here in AZ.

This is an all stock truck, with baked paint as well. For what I paid for it, I can put in a quality rebuilt transmission and get the body/paint done and be less than comparable ones are selling for.
  4. My brother's 2012 had to get a new unit after a trans cooler line came off and pumped out all the atf.

My 2011 frontier ( same basic trans except for gear ratios) trans has been fine. There was a problem with some frontiers having coolant enter the atf via the cooler being part of the radiator. Not sure if this was also true of the titand

  5. I had a 2004 that I planned to keep foreevvvvaaaaa but sold at around 125k miles. Engine was solid. power steering was developing a leak. Tranny was ok, but getting a little clunky. Cracked engine mount i had replaced at ~100k. Cracked exhaust manifold. Paint sucked.

It just felt way too run down for the mileage and use - this was a stock, easy living truck (motorcycle hauling and suburban duties primarily) - didn't have a good feeling about it long term.

  6. I bought a new '08 and towed a 16' cargo trailer everyday with no problems until 59k. Spot of oil under the rearend, doh! Axle seals were failing and Nissan put an entire rear end under mine-a known issue with them. Had it been one thousand miles later I would have had to foot the bill! Sold the truck at 85k, still going strong. I know two people who have run over 200k with nothing but very minor issues.

From what I have researched, it's a possibility on the Titan as well. Easy to check, just pull the trans cooler lines off the radiator and loop them together and start the truck. If coolant is flowing from the trans cooler input/ouput then there is cross contamination.
  8. Rear end issues are common and for some, a source of repeat failure. baldy[1].gif

Nissan purchased shoddy radiators from a supplier for a number of years 2005...2010.
I believe in 2011 everything was receiving the updated/improved/different model.
I don't recall Titans having the "Strawberry Milkshake of Death" issue.
Most of my personal research has been along Xterra & Pathfinder lines.

  9. I have a 2006 Titan XE. It's a nice truck, pulls our 20' trailer without any issues. My DIFF LOCK light came on last week, $4000 to replace the entire rear end. They're good trucks, but they have a few, well documented, major flaws like the cracked headers, rear differentials, leaking transfer cases, etc. Titantalk is a great forum.
  10. It will need a new valve body / TCM (built as a combined unit). The cost of a reman transmission probably wont be much more.

I basically just drove this truck home and parked it after I paid my friend, then went on a 9 day pleasure cruise with a bunch of my USN buddies. When I got home, I had a chance to really look it over.

I must not have looked to closely at the fluid level because it was low. Maybe I checked it while it wasn't running? Anyway, after noticing that I looked around under the truck and saw a lot of oil around the front. One of the transmission cooler lines leading into the radiator was leaking, so I fixed that up and then drained the pan, dropped the transmission pan and cleaned it all up, put it together and then topped off the fluid.

Everything seems right in the world, I drove it about 30 miles with crisp shifting and no slippage. I suppose that the low fluid level may have caused some damage but it could be good for another mile or 100k miles. I'm still happy with the deal.

  12. My buddy had one and the tranny went at 250K. I guess thats not bad considering.

My brother has a Titan too with just over 100K. I drove it the past weekend to pick my daughter up from college and I dont like it. It just felt wore out to me and its not. My brother keeps up with and just had the ball joints replaced, exhaust manifold replaced, power steering leak fixed and so forth. He likes it so thats all that matters.
