Ferrari P80/C is stunning

One-off custom Ferrari is illegal to drive on the road; dubbed "most extreme" design yet

With enough aesthetic splendour to take attention away from the likes of Miranda Kerr and with a more chiseled chin than Henry Cavill, the new Ferrari P80/C is a one-off dream machine.

It's the kind of car that usually exists in the minds of car designers and enthusiasts who have an amazing idea but lack the mega-bucks to make it a reality.

But every now and then one very, very well-heeled car collector commissions something special.

The Ferrari P80/C would have cost a LOT of cash to comission

Behold the Ferrari P80/C, a vehicle the Italian exotic car-maker is calling "the most extreme one-off design ever".

Now, the 'extreme' bit comes from the fact the car is based not on the Ferrari 488 GTB road car, like the Ferrari SP38, but the GT3 race car, which in and of itself is incredibly cool... and courageous.

What this means is the unnamed client could really go to town with the design; nothing was limited by road regulations or design rules.

The Ferrari 488 GT3 race cars cost around half a million... bespoke Ferrari design? Priceless

Want the world's largest rear diffuser? You got it. How about side windows that wrap-around the windscreen? Done. Aluminium louvres on the engine cover and a concave rear windscreen? Too easy.

The result, as you can see, is rather pretty. And the fact that it's not road legal only adds to its legend.

You might notice there are no headlights or tail-lights (well, there are some small slits to appease our sensibilities of what constitutes a 'car') and because the Ferrari 488 GT3 race car is 50mm longer than the road car, the design team headed by Ferrari's chief stylist Flavio Manzoni could focus more visual energy on its rump.

Powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, this one-off creation is light and fast

According to a Ferrari press statement, the brief was to create "a modern sports prototype inspired by iconic models from Ferrari's history," such as the 1966 Dino 206 S and 330 P3/P4.

As well as stirring in a touch of retro Fezza for good measure, the car is delivers the sort of fascinating visuals you rarely find on a production line thanks to its blend of modern day Scuderia Ferrari F1 and Le Mans race car elements.

Powered by a mid-mounted 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that pumps out around 490kW in standard form – which can be seen through the heavily motorsport-inspired rear diffuser and "catamaran-type" rear architecture – the Ferrari P80/C is fully homologated for racetrack use.

"Who spilled coffee on the door handle?"

So much so that the individual who commissioned the unique Ferrari requested that its 18-inch centre-nut racing wheels can be swapped out for bigger, sassier 21-inch footwear, and the mad downforce-generating rear carbon wing can also be removed to focus attention on the sleek bodywork.

At the front-end there is a massive front splitter that attaches via struts to the front body work, the snout of which has clear links to the iconic Dino, the raised front wheel-arches also a tip of the hat to Italian car design from the '60s and '70s.

The owner of the car requested the cabin be tailored for racing but without creating a cockpit devoid of style. As such it's a remarkably clean work station with the rollcage integrated into the bodywork in some areas.

For a race car, that is a very neat cockpit

According to Ferrari the "…side sections of the dashboard have been redesigned from the version seen on the 488 GT3, as have the seat upholstery and door panels".

Given its race car underpinnings, there's a strong chance the Ferrari P80/C will be an absolute weapon around Fiorano, or perhaps even Phillip Island. OK, so we've got no reason to believe the client was an Aussie, but we can dream.

Imagine chilling out at the Phillip Island go-karts one arvo and seeing this ultra-rare beast blatting around? Be still, our collective beating hearts.

Drawing hard-core functionality from motorsport while incorporating a number of classic and modern design cues, the Ferrari P80/C is the sort of car that makes us very happy inside.

Enjoy sifting through the pics and we reckon the video is well worth a watch too, so grab a beverage and plug in your earphones because this thing sounds as good as it looks.
