Hypothetical question -
I know the factory stated top speed of an Mk 2 RS is circa 165 but consider this...
Will a tuned RS have a higher top speed. I ask this because usually if you tune an engine the top speed doesnt really alter because the rev limit/gearing is the same.
However, a JWR 120+ tuning package for example, uses autotec software which raises the reve limit to 7000+ rpm. Would this higher limit, with the BHP to push the car that fast, raise the top speed? and if so, what to?
Has anyone actually maxxed their tuned or un-tuned RS out (obviously in a legal enviroment) and what sort of speeds did they achieve?

well with raising the rev limit then yes the vehicles top speed will be raised!!!
i have the JWR100 and once when on the continent i got to a speedo indicated 160ish, it was just over 160 and the revs were at 5900, now the rev limit of mine is 7100 i think with the JWR kit, but no word of a lie i was
scared at the speed i was doing anyway so i just let off!!!
Id love to get onto bruntingthorpe and try a top speed run there but i dont think even 2miles is enough!!!!

Very few cars even get to their standard maximum speed at Bruntingthorpe, I've been there twice on magazine feature days, 2 miles really is not long enough.

Using a gear ratio calculator with our tyre size at 7100 RPM puts gear max speeds of
1 = 39
2 = 65
3 = 93
4 = 123
5 = 154
6 = 192
at 6175 RPM (which is posted max revs)
1 = 34
2 = 57
3 = 81
4 = 107
5 = 134
6 = 167
taken with a pinch of salt of course, but that calculator puts the car at 159 MPH at 5900 RPM which is pretty close to what was seen.

Now see this is what I was looking for.
So in thoery then, with a 7100 rpm rev limit, and enough power, and a long enough straight, you could see 190 mph from a highly tuned RS. In thoery of course!

When i worked for Honda many years ago a speedo reading of 100mph was actually 95mph so basically 5% higher than actual speed. Ive had my stage 1 up to 170mph on the speedo but if the Ford speedo is similarly calibrated to the Honda one then this is probably about 162mph.

Surely this has more to do with altering the power delivery than removing the rev limit? Most of the power curves seem to imply a tailing off around 6000rpm for whatever reason (airflow, cams, etc) and as we know the power required to go faster increases with the square of the velocity hence little point in revving out beyond 7K unless peak power has been moved further up the rev range too.

Question is on an autobahn would you want to bouncing the limiter off 7100rpm for to long? I think not.

Very Stable, compared to the ST, you can feel the RS spolier pushing the back end of the car down.
